Roston Chase named West Indies Test captain

Roston Chase has been named the new captain of the West Indies men's Test team, stepping into the role more than two years after his last appearance in the longest format. The 33-year-old replaces Kraigg Brathwaite, who stepped down in March. Chase will debut as skipper during the upcoming home Test series against Australia, marking the beginning of the new World Test Championship cycle for both sides. Spinner Jomel Warrican will serve as his deputy. Cricket West Indies (CWI) described the leadership selection process as “data-informed” and based on a “multi-dimensional framework.” Candidates included John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, and Justin Greaves. ODI and T20I captain Shai Hope removed himself from contention to focus on his current duties. The panel overseeing the selection featured head coach Daren Sammy, Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe, and Enoch Lewis, head of the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee. CWI President Dr. Kishore Shallow hailed the process: “This is one of the most strategic and professional leadership selections we’ve made. It represents a new era in how we choose captains for West Indies cricket.” Coach Sammy threw his full support behind Chase’s appointment, calling on fans to do the same. “He’s earned the respect of the dressing room and understands the demands of the job. This is a leader who can take us forward. I urge the Caribbean to stand behind him—we’re on the path to something great.” Chase has featured in 49 Tests, amassing 2265 runs at an average of 26.33 with five centuries. He’s also claimed 85 wickets, with career-best figures of 8 for 60 against England in Bridgetown in 2019.
