Not going to panic but we know what needs fixing - Michael Hussey

Chennai Super Kings, the seasoned titans of the IPL, find themselves in unfamiliar territory in 2025—facing reflection and early recalibration instead of a playoff charge. As the season winds down, the franchise is shifting focus toward rebuilding while staying true to its long-standing ethos. Batting coach Michael Hussey emphasized that while the campaign hasn't gone to plan, the franchise remains committed to its core philosophy. “We’re not going to hit the panic button just because things didn’t click this year,” Hussey stated ahead of CSK’s faceoff with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. “We’ve had lots of internal discussions that have helped us gain clarity on our direction for 2026.” Although he didn't pinpoint specifics, Hussey hinted at targeted off-season strategies. One glaring area of concern has been their underwhelming form at Chepauk. Historically a fortress, CSK have already lost five matches at home this year—more than they lost in total across four previous full-home seasons. Losing their grip against teams like RCB, DC, and SRH has been a tough pill, and even the toss hasn't gone their way since their first two games. But Hussey acknowledged that the issues run deeper. “It’s strange losing so many games at home,” he said. “Opponents have figured out how to play at Chepauk. Dew hasn’t helped, but we’ve been sloppy—too many mistakes across the board. That’s hurt, especially in front of our loyal fans who always turn out in force.” Despite languishing at the bottom of the standings, Hussey believes CSK are still a competitive side plagued more by fine margins than fundamental flaws. “This league is incredibly tight. A couple of missed opportunities, injuries, or even bad luck can swing games. Sure, we’re down the table, but I genuinely feel we’re not far off. We’ve got match-winners who just haven’t clicked together.” He drew parallels with Rajasthan Royals' fate this season: “Look at Rajasthan—they’re out now too. But there were at least three games they could’ve won. Small moments flipped those results. This league is brutal like that.” As for motivation heading into the final games, Hussey dismissed any concerns. “This team is proud. They understand the weight of the jersey. There’s a massive fan base backing us, and every player wants to finish strong—not just for pride but to secure spots for the future. These matches are a chance for new faces to show they belong.” For CSK, the final stretch may not be about silverware, but it’s far from meaningless. A few wins, breakout performances, and a clearer picture for 2026—that’s now the mission.
