Mitch Hay , Muhammad Abbas earn maiden NZC contracts

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has awarded maiden central contracts for the 2025–26 season to four promising players: Mitch Hay, Muhammad Abbas, Zak Foulkes, and Adithya Ashok. This move reflects NZC's commitment to nurturing emerging talent and preparing for a dynamic international calendar. Mitch Hay: Wicketkeeper-Batter on the Rise Mitch Hay, a 24-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, has made significant strides in his early international career. He notably scored an unbeaten 99 off 78 balls in an ODI against Pakistan in April 2025, showcasing his batting prowess. Additionally, during his debut T20I tour in Sri Lanka in November, Hay set a world record with six dismissals in a single match, underlining his skills behind the stumps. Muhammad Abbas: A Rapid Ascent Born in Lahore, Pakistan, Muhammad Abbas moved to New Zealand during his youth and has quickly risen through the cricketing ranks. The 21-year-old all-rounder made headlines by scoring a blistering 52 off 26 balls on his ODI debut against Pakistan in March 2025, marking the fastest fifty by a debutant in men's ODIs. His left-arm medium-fast bowling adds depth to his all-round capabilities. Strategic Shifts in NZC's Contracting Approach The inclusion of Hay and Abbas, along with Foulkes and Ashok, signifies a strategic shift by NZC to invest in young talent. This comes as seasoned players like Kane Williamson, Devon Conway, Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Lockie Ferguson have opted for casual contracts, allowing them to participate in global T20 leagues while remaining available for national selection. Notably, experienced spinners Ish Sodhi and Ajaz Patel were omitted from the central contract list, influenced by the emergence of leg-spinner Adithya Ashok.
