Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket, concluding a distinguished 13-year career in the format. Maxwell, 36, played 149 ODIs for Australia, scoring 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81 and a remarkable strike rate of 126.7—the second-highest in ODI history among players with over 2,000 runs. He also took 77 wickets with his off-spin bowling. Maxwell was instrumental in Australia's World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023. His most memorable performance came during the 2023 World Cup, where he scored an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan, rescuing Australia from a precarious position of 91 for 7 to chase down a target of 292. Citing the physical toll of the format and a desire to focus on T20 cricket, Maxwell stated that he did not see himself being part of the 2027 World Cup and wanted to provide opportunities for younger players. He will continue to represent Australia in T20 Internationals, with an eye on the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg praised Maxwell as one of the most exciting and influential figures in ODI history, highlighting his critical role in Australia's 2023 World Cup victory.
