Brathwaite steps down as West Indies test captain after 4 years

Kraigg Brathwaite has stepped down as the West Indies Test captain ahead of their upcoming home series against Australia. Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced that Brathwaite had communicated his decision earlier this year, aiming to ensure a smooth transition for the new leadership. Brathwaite, who is just two matches away from playing his 100th Test, has decided to focus on his batting without the added pressure of captaincy. CWI has acknowledged his contributions and leadership over the years and will announce his successor in the coming weeks. In other leadership changes, Shai Hope has taken over as the West Indies T20I captain, replacing Rovman Powell, while continuing to lead the ODI side. Kraigg Brathwaite has officially stepped down as West Indies Test captain after leading the side in 39 Tests between 2017 and 2025, securing ten wins and enduring 22 losses. He formally took over as captain in 2021, and his tenure included several notable achievements, such as the historic Gabba Test win in Australia in January 2024, a 1-1 series draw in Pakistan in 2025, and a 1-0 home series win against England in 2022. Cricket West Indies (CWI) praised Brathwaite’s leadership and contributions. "Kraigg Brathwaite has been an outstanding leader for our Test team, guiding the squad with discipline, resilience, and a deep understanding of the game," said Miles Bascombe, CWI Director of Cricket. "His contributions have been invaluable, and under his leadership, we have witnessed historic moments that will be remembered for years to come." Meanwhile, Shai Hope has been appointed the new T20I captain, adding to his role as the ODI captain, following the recommendation of head coach Daren Sammy. Hope replaces Rovman Powell, who had led the T20I side since May 2023 and achieved series wins against India, England, and South Africa at home. Daren Sammy believes Hope’s leadership is well-suited for the evolving dynamics of West Indies cricket. "Shai is a strong believer in team performances, and his meticulous preparation, coupled with his calm and composed demeanour under pressure, makes him an ideal leader at this stage," Sammy said. Powell accepted the decision with professionalism and grace, with Bascombe acknowledging his contributions and the strong foundation he laid for the T20 team.
