After suffering "trauma" from a shoulder injury, Cameron Bancroft was made captain of Gloucestershire.

Cameron Bancroft hopes to fully recover from his shoulder injury in time to captain Gloucestershire at the beginning of the 2025 County Championship season. He also wants to play for Western Australia again next month. When Bancroft was playing for Sydney Thunder in the BBL in January, he got into a horrible fight with Daniel Sams. He has said that the fight has caused him some "trauma." After breaking his nose and shoulder, he hasn't played since, but he hopes to play in the Sheffield Shield in March before going to England. After Graeme van Buuren left at the end of last season, Gloucestershire announced on Wednesday that he would take over as captain of their Championship team this year. Bancroft stated to the club's channels that he is "getting close" to full fitness and recovering "pretty well." The shoulder is tracking properly. Bancroft stated, "Obviously, there was a little bit of trauma there to deal with and manage." "There are definitely things I'm learning that I've seen a lot of other players go through. The body heals over time; I'm getting very close and looking forward to playing cricket at the beginning of March." Bancroft made an impression for Gloucestershire across all formats in 2024. He scored three hundreds in the Championship and was their leading run scorer as they won the T20 Blast. He is expected to return for the full season in 2025, and head coach Mark Alleyne said last year that his attitude made him the best captain choice. Alleyne stated that Cameron "led by example in everything he did" and had an impressive year with us in 2024. "His dedication to preparation and subsequent transference of that in the middle is something I adore. He has a wide range of experience that our players can draw from because he has played Test cricket and won four-day titles." Bancroft is of the opinion that Gloucestershire can pursue promotion despite finishing second-bottom in Division Two last year. He stated, "We had great lessons last year." "We'll use those lessons, continue working on our strengths and really good things, and draw on those lessons." We will be a team that is extremely difficult to beat and extremely competitive if we are able to accomplish that."
