Mahela Jayawardene Bold Prediction For India-Australia Test Series: Probably 2-1 Win For India

On Thursday, the fourth and final Test of Australia's four-match tour of India begins.

As the Border Gavaskar Trophy series begins on Thursday in Nagpur, legendary Sri Lanka batter Mahela Jayawardene believes Australia has a great chance of defeating India. In a four-match Test series in India, Australia, and India will face each other, ranked No.1 and 2 in the ICC Men's Test Team Rankings and in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2023.

As a result of winning the series in Australia in 2020-21, India is the current holder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

In spite of the fact that Australia hasn't won a Test series in India since 2004, Jayawardena believes Pat Cummins-led Australia will break their duck during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, beginning on February 9 in Nagpur.

I think this series will always be a great one. I think Indian conditions and how the Australian batsmen tackle that, they do have a really good bowling unit and how the Indian batsmen tackle that, it depends on how each team starts the series and who has that momentum. "It will be fascinating," Mahela Jayawardene said in the latest ICC Review.

It's hard to predict, but as a Sri Lankan, I'm hoping that Australia will win. There's a good chance they'll win 2-1, but it will be a tough one."

Shubman Gill's impressive recent run has boosted India's chances of defeating that powerful Australian bowling attack.

Having made a significant impact in white-ball cricket, Jayawardene believes he can make a similar impact in red-ball cricket.

"He's been very good, he's technically very sound and he's a good pace player. This will keep him in good stead against that Australian attack, but it will always be tough and it will be a great series," the Sri Lankan said of Gill.

It would be great for India if he could convert his current form into red-ball cricket with the same tempo, maturity, and understanding of the situations and conditions that he has at the moment. "He gives them those good starts at a good tempo to put opposition bowling attacks under pressure," he said.

The fourth and final Test of Australia's four-match tour of India begins on Thursday.
