IPL form nods to international experience by Axar

In the IPL 2023, India all-rounder Axar Patel has credited a prolonged period in the national team setup for his improved batting form.

Axar combined with Australia's David Warner to score 67 runs in just 6.2 overs for the Delhi Capitals against the Mumbai Indians on Tuesday.

With five sixes in the knock, Axar took the Capitals out of the woods at 98/5 in the 13th over, putting the team on 172. The target proved challenging, but Mumbai pulled off a last-ball victory in another last-ball thriller.

His 91 white-ball appearances for India have included a starring role in India's Border-Gavaskar victory over Australia, as well as a fruitful T20I series against Sri Lanka earlier this year.

Over the course of his half-century in the IPL, the all-rounder has also worked under Ricky Ponting at the Capitals, though he emphasized the importance of international experience.

"Playing all three formats for India boosts your confidence," Axar said.

Despite walking out to bat in late-over situations, Axar had to go for broke from the first ball of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia last year. The 29-year-old has been in the middle of India's Test series against Australia as well as its T20I series against Sri Lanka earlier this year in 2023.

Axar credits the opportunities earlier in the year as invaluable.

Axar said, "As an all-rounder, you think you can go for the big shots when you score 20-30 runs. But I changed my mindset, and now I want to control the game and finish it."

From the Sri Lanka series, when I scored runs, I gained confidence, and that confidence carried over to the rest of the series."

Axar was thrown in a little earlier than expected during the Sri Lanka series, with scores of 31* (20), 65 (31), and 21* (9), helping India to a 2-1 series win.

A Delhi side desperate for their first win of the 2023 tournament can rely on experience, according to the all-rounder.

"Even if I bat at No.4, 10-12 overs will be enough for me," he said.

Teammate Warner has faith in Axar should he move up the ranks in the future.

Warner said, "We have some positives from the last three games, but we shouldn't lose wickets in clumps."
