How can India T20 World Cup 2021 qualify for the semi-finals?

India made a poor start to the T20 World Cup after losing to Pakistan and then New Zealand in the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Virat Kohli & Co. are still within chances of making the semi-finals after beating Afghanistan and Scotland.

India, placed in Group 2 along with Afghanistan, Namibia, Scotland, Pakistan, and New Zealand is looking to finish second, with an unbeaten Pakistan leading the way and advancing to the semi-finals. As per the format, only the top two teams advance to the last-four stage of the event.

Major victories over Afghanistan, where India posted 210/2, and Scotland, who were bowled out for just 85, helped India to four points while raising their net run rate (NRR).

As things stand on Sunday, New Zealand has six points, after three wins and one loss (vs Pakistan), ahead of India, Afghanistan (four points each), Namibia (2 points), and Scotland (0 points).

How can India qualify?

On Sunday, Afghanistan takes on New Zealand in Abu Dhabi on not only their own but also India's forward-looking hopes. India must Afghanistan to beat NZ (New Zealand) & preferably by a small margin. India's win against Namibia on Monday (November 8) would mean a three-way contest. India, Afghanistan & New Zealand will all have six points.

And it will come down to the net run rate in a three-way tie. India's defeat to Scotland allowed them to overtake Afghanistan and New Zealand on net run rate. He now has a run rate of +1.619 as compared to Afghanistan's +1.481 and New Zealand's +1.277.

With the luxury of playing for the last time in the Super 12 stage against Namibia, India could turn the result in their favor if things go well.

However, if New Zealand beat Afghanistan, they will qualify for the semi-finals with 8 points. India can raise a maximum of 6. Hence, the whole of India must be praying for Afghanistan to win against the Kiwis.

India's T20 World Cup 2021 so far

India suffered a 10-wicket loss to Pakistan for their first loss to neighbors in an ICC event. Following this, New Zealand beat India by 8 wickets for their fourth consecutive win against the Men in Blue in all formats of the game.

Troubled by two disappointing performances, India bounced back with a win over Afghanistan and most recently against Scotland where they needed just 39 balls to chase down 86 runs.

Against Scotland, the bowlers showed a scintillating game as they bowled out Scotland for 85 in a winning game. Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami took three wickets while Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets.

Indians needed a big win to increase the run rate. And openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul came out firing on all cylinders. The pair scored 70 runs in five overs.

Rohit was caught lbw by the wheel for 30 runs in 16 balls. Rahul completed his half-century in 19 balls but was caught at long-on by Watt.

Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav took India across the finish line. Suryakumar ended the match with a six as India chased down the target in just 6.3 overs.
