Mark Dayal led the charge for the
Kings in a high-scoring contest. He hit six sixes in his innings of 78 off 44
balls as his team scored 205 in the first innings. The Knight Riders, despite a
shaky start, did not let the run rate get out of hand for too long,
contributing to keeping them hunting through the batting order.
It looked like a game was all set
for Kieron Pollard to end, but once David Wiese - who had taken five wickets -
got rid of him, things started to get out of hand and the Kings took the game
has been closed.
The Kings elected to bat after
winning the toss and got off to a blazing start despite losing Cornwall for a
duck and Fletcher being out of form. The man to attack was Deyal, whose
scintillating timing and scintillating ball-striking made the Knight Riders' The bowling attack smash into all parts of the field. His dominance of the
competition was so complete that by the end of the Powerplay, the Kings had
reached 73 - 60 of them were responsible for Dayal.
After Fletcher and Dayal were
removed, the Knight Riders came back strongly in the middle overs, thanks to
another wonderful four-over spell from Sunil Narine, who immediately put the
brakes on the Kings. While he had the ball in hand, the Kings' boundaries dried
up, and once he was done, he conceded just 12 runs in his allotted four overs.
In the final four overs, however,
all hell broke loose with Wiese and Tim David at the crease as monstrous power
combined with some fairly lousy Knight Riders bowling. A staggering 70 came off
the final four overs, undoing the good work done earlier and setting the Knight
Riders on an impossible 206 for victory.

The Knight Riders' reaction was
hampered by the absence of the kind of role Deyle played in the opening overs,
with none of the batsmen able to piece together the innings. Sunil Narine's
quick-witted cameos set the stage, but it was noteworthy that the Kings
continued to take regular wickets, by the end of the game, none other than
Narayan had managed to reach 30. Four other batsmen fell between the scores of
25 and 29, and they all succumbed to their shots, with Deyal, Wiese, and David
succeeding at the crease difference between the two sides.
Under pressure, the experienced
Wiese made an equally remarkable contribution with the ball in hand, forcing
Pollard to go through Ramdin to the top edge just as he appeared to be hitting
his groove. He will follow up with a few more wickets to make it a five-for in
his final over before Kings end his dream of retaining the title through the
Knight Riders' lower order.
